Cranial Prosthetic Care Guide

Welcome

Your cranial prosthetic is more than hair—it’s part of your healing, confidence, and daily comfort. Proper care will help maintain its beauty, extend its lifespan, and protect your scalp.

Daily Care

  • Gently detangle using a wide-tooth comb or wig brush, starting from the ends and working upward

  • Avoid excessive pulling or tension, especially around the hairline

  • Store on a mannequin head or satin bag when not in use

  • Limit exposure to smoke, strong odors, and heavy perfumes

Shampooing Your Cranial Prosthetic

Frequency: Every 7–14 wears (or as needed)
Steps:

  1.  Fill a basin with cool to lukewarm water

  2.  Add a sulfate-free, gentle shampoo

  3.  Submerge and gently cleanse—do not rub or twist

  4.  Rinse thoroughly in the same direction as the hair

  5.  Apply a moisturizing conditioner (avoid the base/cap)

  6.  Rinse and gently blot with a towel

Drying

  • Place on a wig stand and allow to air dry

  • Avoid wringing or twisting

  • Blow drying should be done on low heat only, preferably by a professional

Styling

  • Use low heat settings when using hot tools

  • Always apply a heat protectant

  • Avoid excessive heat to preserve hair quality

  • For textured or curly units, use light moisturizing products to maintain pattern

Sleeping

  • Remove your cranial prosthetic before bed when possible

  • If sleeping in it, use a silk bonnet or silk pillowcase to reduce friction

Adhesive & Scalp Care

  • Cleanse your scalp regularly with gentle, non-irritating products

  • Remove adhesive carefully using professional-grade adhesive remover

  • Never pull the unit off without proper removal

  • Allow your scalp to breathe between wears when possible

Product Recommendations

  • Sulfate-free shampoo

  • Lightweight, alcohol-free leave-in conditioner

  • Heat protectant spray

  • Adhesive remover designed for medical-grade units (We’re happy to recommend products tailored specifically to your unit and lifestyle.)
